‘Telfie Central’ is the centre-based day service of The Redwoods Caring Foundation situated in the North East of Edinburgh. Our service offers day activities to adults with learning disabilities.Activities and opportunities are organised in the context of a community and so there are significant benefits to individuals that go beyond the confines of each specific activity. The service outcomes we aim to provide are:
- that Telfie Central is a place where our Service Users have a sense of belonging, community and friendship.
- People are given opportunities to make choices….to express themselves ….explore their creativity…. learn new skills.
- This enables people to **grow in confidence, self- esteem and independence. **
Within each group activity there are opportunities to achieve positive outcomes for individuals as expressed in the Keys To Life document. We take a holistic approach to developing opportunities within the context of a safe environment and with the support of well trained, caring and committed staff. When an individual requires 1:1 support this can be facilitated, subject to funding, either within a group setting or not as preferred. The range of activities we offer are grouped into four main themes:- Living Well: includes staying active, cooking and shopping, eating well, health and well- being, building self- worth and living well alongside others. We also offer access to music and drama therapies.
- The Blossom Studio: includes expressing creativity, developing skills, visiting art galleries and exhibitions, exhibiting work.
- New Shoots: includes gardening at the near-by allotment, learning about food from soil to plate, planning and organising.

- Connecting with Life: includes communicating with others, being understood and understanding others, active citizenship, enjoying events in Edinburgh, Involvement Group, developing life skills, learning about how LIFE works.

Activities are not solely centre based. Most groups go out into the community to access services and opportunities. Where possible Service users are involved in deciding and planning what they would like to do. Where this is not possible staff will offer ideas based on their knowledge and understanding of people’s interests, consulting with families and carers as needed. Staff are responsive to the reactions and responses of those service users who cannot communicate verbally and will work with them to find what is most meaningful to them. We have staff trained in administering Borders College courses, and these are great not just for enjoyment and satisfaction, but for developing people's interests and life skills in a structured way.We have a 9 seater minibus which enables service users to access local amenities throughout the year. Those who can, and like to, are supported to use public transport as well. For enquiries about availability, our rates, or general questions, please contact us on 0131 669 4817.
